Acts 26:6

And now I stand and am judged for the hope of the promise made of God unto our fathers:

Acts 26:6 (KJV)

Acts 26 records the apostle Paul’s defense before King Agrippa. Paul was arrested and brought to trial on charges brought by Jewish leaders. In this verse, he tells the king that he stands and is judged for the hope of the promise made by God to the fathers—the patriarchs of Israel.

The “hope of the promise” is the messianic expectation God gave to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: that He would send a Messiah to bring salvation and redemption. Paul’s hope was not a new invention; it was rooted in the ancestral promises of Israel. He was on trial because he proclaimed that this promise had been fulfilled in Jesus Christ.

Paul’s phrase “I stand and am judged” shows that he faced legal examination for this hope. His defense was not merely personal; it was a declaration that the gospel is the fulfillment of what God had promised to the Jewish people. The trial itself became an opportunity to proclaim that the Messiah had come.

As believers today, we can draw several lessons from Acts 26:6:

  • Stand for the hope: Just as Paul stood firm in the hope of the promise, we are called to stand firm in our faith and proclaim the hope we have in Christ.

  • Trust in God’s promises: The promises of God are sure and trustworthy. Just as He fulfilled His promise to send a Messiah, He will fulfill His promises to us.

  • Expect opposition: Paul faced judgment because of his commitment to this hope. We should not be surprised if we encounter opposition for our faith, but we can take courage knowing that God is with us.

  • Share the gospel: Paul’s defense before Agrippa is an example of boldly testifying about Jesus, the fulfillment of God’s promise, and the hope of salvation available to all who believe.

Acts 26:6 highlights Paul’s unwavering commitment to the hope of the promise made by God to the fathers. As believers, we are called to stand firm in our faith, trust in God’s promises, expect opposition, and share the gospel with boldness, just as Paul did.
