Acts 6:11

Posted on 18 May at 14:35

“Then they suborned men, which said, We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses, and against God.”

Context:Acts 6:11 is part of a narrative in the Book of Acts that describes a conflict arising within the early Christian community. The chapter begins by highlighting the issue of the Hellenistic Jews (Greek-speaking Jews) feeling neglected in the daily distribution of food. The apostles appointed seven men, including Stephen, to oversee the equitable distribution of resources. However, Stephen’s boldness and wisdom in preaching the Gospel soon led to opposition and false accusations against him.

Analysis:

Suborned men:The verse starts by mentioning that certain individuals were “suborned.” To “suborn” means to induce or bribe someone to commit a wrongful act or give false testimony. In this case, certain opponents of Stephen were manipulated or bribed to make false accusations against him. This indicates the hostile intent of those who opposed Stephen’s teachings.

Blasphemous words against Moses and God:The false witnesses claimed that they had heard Stephen speak blasphemous words against Moses and God. This accusation was serious because both Moses and God held revered positions in the Jewish faith. Blasphemy refers to speaking irreverently or contemptuously against something or someone sacred.

This accusation against Stephen indicates that he might have been challenging traditional Jewish beliefs and interpretations regarding the law of Moses and the nature of God. Stephen’s message likely emphasized the fulfilment of the Old Testament prophecies through Jesus Christ and the transformative power of the Gospel.

Significance:

Acts 6:11 serves as a turning point in Stephen’s story, foreshadowing the events that would lead to his martyrdom in Acts 7. Stephen’s teachings challenged the religious establishment and threatened their authority, leading to fierce opposition. This verse highlights the hostility faced by early Christians as they proclaimed the message of Jesus and the new covenant.

Furthermore, Acts 6:11 reminds us of the importance of truth and integrity in bearing witness. False accusations can cause harm and injustice. In Stephen’s case, false witnesses were used as a means to undermine his message and incite controversy.

  • Stand firm in the face of opposition:Like Stephen, we may encounter opposition when sharing our faith or speaking truth. It is essential to remain steadfast, relying on the Holy Spirit’s guidance and wisdom.
  • Seek the truth:When false accusations arise, we should strive to discern the truth and not be swayed by mere hearsay or deceptive testimonies. We can turn to God’s Word, prayer, and wise counsel to find clarity.
  • Embrace boldness and wisdom:Stephen’s example teaches us to boldly proclaim the Gospel while relying on God’s wisdom. When we encounter opportunities to share our faith, let us do so with clarity, love, and a deep understanding of God’s Word.

In conclusion, Acts 6:11 reveals the false accusations made against Stephen and the opposition faced by early Christians. It reminds us of the importance of standing firm, seeking truth, and relying on the Holy Spirit when faced with opposition.
