Acts 6:12

Acts 6:12 (KJV)

Luke records the growth of the early church and the challenges it faced as the gospel spread. Just before this event, the apostles appointed seven men, including Stephen, to oversee the daily distribution of food to widows, so that they could devote themselves to prayer and the ministry of the Word.

Acts 6:12 describes how certain unnamed opponents stirred up the people, the elders, and the scribes. The Greek verb translated “stirred up” (synekínēsan) means to incite together, indicating a coordinated agitation. The people were the common populace, easily provoked when they perceived that the law of Moses was being treated with contempt. The elders and scribes were members of the Sanhedrin, the Jewish ruling council in Jerusalem, to whom religious charges properly belonged. The opponents then came upon Stephen suddenly, seized him, and brought him before the council, setting the stage for his trial.

Stephen was distinguished by wisdom and the power of the Holy Spirit, performing great wonders and signs among the people (Acts 6:8). His bold preaching challenged the religious authorities, leading to opposition and arrest. This opposition was not spontaneous; his opponents had previously suborned men to testify falsely against him (Acts 6:11). Jesus warned that his followers would be brought before councils (Matthew 10:17-18; Mark 13:9), and Stephen’s experience fulfills that warning.

Stephen’s example urges believers to rely on the power of the Holy Spirit in every circumstance, especially when facing adversity. It calls us to be courageous and bold in standing for the truth, regardless of the consequences, and to remain steadfast in faith when opposition arises. The reality of persecution against faithful witnesses reminds us that faithfulness to Christ may bring conflict, but the Spirit enables us to endure.

For a fuller picture of Stephen’s story, continue reading Acts 6:12-8:1, which details his defense before the council, his martyrdom, and the subsequent spread of the gospel beyond Jerusalem. Diligent study of Scripture, together with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, deepens our understanding and equips us to apply these timeless truths to our own lives.
