Context
The apostle Paul wrote the letter to the Colossians to address false teachings that were diminishing the supremacy and sufficiency of Christ. In Colossians 2:9, Paul makes a direct and powerful declaration of the full divinity of Jesus Christ. The Greek verb translated “dwelleth” (κατοικεῖ) means to dwell permanently or settle down, indicating a lasting residence rather than a temporary visit. The phrase “fulness of the Godhead” (πᾶν τὸ πλήρωμα τῆς θεότητος) means the entire fullness of deity, not merely a portion or an emanation.
Meaning
The term “fulness of the Godhead” refers to the complete divine nature or deity of God. It signifies that Jesus possesses all the essential qualities and attributes of God. In Christ, there is no deficiency or lack; He is fully God, not a lesser or subordinate deity. This verse affirms the essential Christian belief in the deity of Jesus Christ, that He is God in human form.
The word “dwelleth” implies a permanent and continuous indwelling of the divine nature in Christ. Jesus is not merely a temporary vessel for God’s presence but the embodiment of God on earth. This emphasises the intimate and inseparable union between God and Christ.
The phrase “bodily” (σωματικῶς) highlights the physical incarnation of Jesus Christ. It emphasises that Jesus took on human flesh, becoming fully human while still being fully God. Through the incarnation, God became accessible and relatable to humanity, experiencing our joys, sorrows, and temptations, yet without sin. Jesus’ bodily existence demonstrates God’s willingness to identify with humanity and provide redemption through His sacrificial death on the cross.
While God is everywhere by His powerful presence, was present in the tabernacle and temple in a singular way, and dwells in believers by special grace, He resides in the human nature of Christ in the highest and most exalted manner. The human nature of Christ is to the deity what the body is to the human soul—it is the dwelling place or house of God. This truth is foundational for understanding the person of Christ and the doctrine of the incarnation.
Application
Recognise and affirm the deity of Jesus Christ: As Christians, we must hold firm to the belief that Jesus is not merely a great teacher or prophet but that He is the Son of God, fully divine.
Place our trust in the sufficiency of Christ: Since Jesus is the complete embodiment of God and has all authority, we can rely on Him for our salvation, guidance, and provision. We don’t need to look elsewhere or follow false teachings.
Seek an intimate relationship with Christ: Knowing that the fulness of the Godhead dwells in Jesus should encourage us to pursue a deeper relationship with Him. We can approach Him with confidence, knowing that He understands and sympathises with our weaknesses.
