Daniel 5:17
Then Daniel answered and said before the king, Let thy gifts be to thyself, and give thy rewards to another; yet I will read the writing unto the king, and make known to him the interpretation.
Daniel 5:17 (KJV)
Context
Daniel 5 records events during the reign of King Belshazzar of Babylon. At a great feast, the king used sacred vessels taken from the temple in Jerusalem for drinking. Suddenly a mysterious hand appeared and wrote on the wall. Terrified, Belshazzar offered gifts and rewards to anyone who could interpret the writing, but his wise men failed. Daniel was then summoned before the king.
Meaning
In this verse, Daniel answers the king with remarkable freedom and boldness. He refuses the king’s gifts and rewards, telling Belshazzar to keep them for himself or give them to another. Yet Daniel still promises to read the writing and make known its interpretation. His refusal shows that his service is not motivated by personal gain or royal favor, but by faithfulness to God. He will not allow material benefits to compromise his prophetic duty.
Daniel’s response also reveals his humility and dependence on God. He does not flatter the king or seek advancement. Instead, he prioritizes delivering God’s message, even though the interpretation will bring sobering news. His courage is striking because he addresses a powerful, alarmed king without self-interest or fear.
Application
Daniel’s example encourages believers to stand firm in their convictions and not compromise their faith for worldly rewards. It reminds us to trust in God’s provision and wisdom in times of uncertainty, relying on the Lord rather than on human incentives. Like Daniel, we should approach challenges with humility, recognizing our limitations and seeking God’s guidance. When we acknowledge our need for God, He can work through us in extraordinary ways.
Do we exhibit the same courage and loyalty to God in our lives? Are we willing to stand firm in our faith, even when faced with opposition or tempting offers? Do we humbly depend on God’s wisdom in all circumstances? Daniel’s unwavering faith led to the interpretation of the writing, resulting in Belshazzar’s downfall and the rise of Darius the Mede. May we be inspired to show similar faith, courage, and dependence on God.
Reflection
Daniel’s words challenge us to examine our own motives. When we serve God, do we seek His approval or the rewards of this world? His boldness reminds us that truth must be spoken regardless of the cost. As we face our own tests of integrity, we can draw strength from the same God who gave Daniel wisdom and courage.
