Daniel 5:18

O thou king, the most high God gave Nebuchadnezzar thy father a kingdom, and majesty, and glory, and honour:

Context

The events of Daniel 5 take place shortly before the fall of Babylon, where King Belshazzar hosts a great feast for a thousand of his lords. During the feast a mysterious hand appears and writes on the wall. Troubled and fearful, Belshazzar calls for the wise men of Babylon to interpret the writing, but none are able to do so. The queen suggests that Daniel, who had interpreted dreams for Nebuchadnezzar, be called. Daniel is brought before the king and given the opportunity to interpret the writing.

Meaning

Daniel addresses Belshazzar directly, reminding him that the Most High God—not Nebuchadnezzar’s own power or inheritance—gave him a kingdom, majesty, glory, and honour. The Hebrew title “El Elyon” (Most High God) emphasizes God’s supreme sovereignty over all earthly rulers. The four gifts listed are divine grants, not human achievements. This sets up the contrast in the following verses: Nebuchadnezzar’s kingdom was given by God, and when he became proud, God humbled him until he acknowledged God’s sovereignty.
