Daniel 6:21

Posted on 18 May at 14:57
Listen to this article

“Then said Daniel unto the king, O king, live for ever.”

Context:The book of Daniel recounts the story of a young Jewish exile named Daniel who found favor with the Babylonian kings due to his wisdom and integrity. In Daniel 6, we find the account of Daniel in the lion’s den. Daniel’s enemies plotted against him, knowing that he was a man of prayer who would not compromise his devotion to God. The king, Darius, was tricked into issuing a decree that anyone who prayed to any god or man except the king would be thrown into the den of lions. Daniel, faithful to his God, continued to pray to God three times a day.

Faithfulness in the Face of Adversity:Despite the decree and the threat of punishment, Daniel remained steadfast in his commitment to worship and pray to God alone. His enemies sought to bring him down, but he did not waver in his faith. This verse highlights Daniel’s response to the king after spending a night in the lion’s den. Daniel acknowledges the king’s authority and expresses his wish for the king’s well-being, even though the king’s decree had put Daniel’s life in danger.

Respect and Humility:Daniel’s words reflect his respect and humility towards the king. He addresses the king as “O king” and expresses his desire for the king’s long life by saying, “live forever.” Despite the king’s inadvertent role in Daniel’s predicament, Daniel does not harbor bitterness or resentment. Instead, he models humility and grace by extending well wishes to the king.

Trust in God’s Deliverance:Daniel’s response to the king also reveals his unwavering trust in God. By addressing the king in this manner, Daniel demonstrates that he believes God has preserved the king’s life and authority. Daniel recognizes that God is ultimately in control of all things and that his own life is in God’s hands. This acknowledgment of God’s sovereignty is a consistent theme throughout the book of Daniel.

Application:Daniel’s example encourages us to remain faithful to God, even in the face of opposition or persecution. Like Daniel, we may encounter situations where our faith is challenged or we face adversity for our beliefs. In such moments, we can draw strength from Daniel’s unwavering trust in God and his commitment to prayer. We should strive to respond with humility and respect towards those in authority, even if they have inadvertently caused us harm. Trusting in God’s deliverance, we can maintain our integrity and bear witness to His faithfulness.

  • In conclusion:Daniel 6:21 captures Daniel’s response to the king after surviving a night in the lion’s den. It showcases his faithfulness, humility, and trust in God, providing us with an example of unwavering devotion and an encouragement to remain steadfast in our faith, even in the midst of adversity.
