Daniel 6:22

My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions’ mouths, that they have not hurt me: forasmuch as before him innocency was found in me; and also before thee, O king, have I done no hurt.

Context

Daniel speaks these words to King Darius immediately after being lifted from the den of lions. Jealous officials had manipulated the king into issuing a decree that forbade prayer to anyone but him for thirty days. Daniel continued his custom of praying three times a day, and for that he was thrown to the lions. The king, distressed and hopeful, hurried to the den at dawn and called to Daniel, who answered with this testimony of deliverance.

Meaning

Daniel credits his rescue entirely to God: “My God hath sent his angel.” The angel’s action of shutting the lions’ mouths shows God’s sovereignty over creation—He can restrain even the most ferocious beasts to protect His servant. Daniel also declares his innocence before both God and the king. This is not a claim to sinless perfection but to blamelessness in the matter for which he was accused. He had broken the king’s decree only because it conflicted with his higher loyalty to God. His integrity was evident in both directions: faithful obedience before God and no crime against the state.

Application

Daniel’s example encourages believers to maintain faithful prayer and integrity, even when facing opposition or death. His deliverance reminds us that God is able to protect and vindicate His people. While we may not always be rescued from harm in this life, we can trust that God is sovereign and that He will ultimately honor those who remain steadfast in devotion to Him.

Reflection

Daniel’s testimony challenges us to examine our own lives. Is our integrity evident both before God and before earthly authorities? Do we continue in faithful prayer even when it is costly? The God who sent His angel to shut the lions’ mouths is the same God who watches over us today, able to deliver and faithful to His own.
