Deuteronomy 1:21

Behold, the Lord thy God hath set the land before thee: go up and possess it, as the Lord God of thy fathers hath said unto thee; fear not, neither be discouraged.

Deuteronomy 1:21 (KJV)

Deuteronomy records Moses’ final words to the Israelites before they entered the Promised Land. This verse comes at a pivotal moment: the people are camped at the mountain of the Amorites, on the borders of Canaan, after forty years of wilderness wandering. Moses addresses the new generation, reminding them of God’s promise to give them the land of Canaan, which He had sworn to their fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

The immediate setting matters. In the verses that follow, the people propose sending spies into the land, a request Moses approves, but the spies’ report later stirs fear and rebellion. Here, however, Moses speaks plainly: God has set the land before them, and they are to go up and possess it.

The opening word “Behold” calls for attention. Moses is directing the Israelites to see what God has already done: He has set the land before them. The promise is sure, and the land is ready for them to take. The phrase “as the Lord God of thy fathers hath said unto thee” grounds this command in the covenantal promise made to the patriarchs. God’s word stands behind the command.

The instruction to “go up and possess” implies action. God’s promise did not negate their responsibility to obey and take steps of faith. They were to actively participate in claiming what God had given. The task was daunting, with fortified cities and formidable enemies, yet Moses calls them to exercise courage and overcome fear and discouragement.

The exhortation “fear not, neither be discouraged” is a call to trust in God’s presence and power. The Israelites were not to be paralyzed by the obstacles before them. Instead, they were to step forward in faith, knowing that God would be with them.

This verse echoes the pattern of God’s faithfulness throughout Scripture. The promise to the fathers, the command to possess the land, and the call to courage all point to a God who keeps His word and equips His people to walk in obedience. The same God who set the land before Israel is the God who goes before His people in every generation.

Deuteronomy 1:21 speaks to us today as a reminder of God’s faithfulness and the need for obedience and courage in our own lives. Like the Israelites, we may face challenges, obstacles, and uncertainties. However, we can draw strength from the knowledge that God is faithful to His promises and that He goes before us.

We are called to trust in Him, step out in faith, and not be overcome by fear or discouragement. When God sets something before us, He also gives the grace to take the next step. The command to possess what God has promised remains a call to active trust, not passive waiting.

Consider what God has set before you. Is there a step of obedience you have delayed because of fear or discouragement? The same God who spoke to Israel through Moses speaks to His people through His word, calling them to trust His promises and move forward in faith. Fear and discouragement lose their power when we remember who has gone before us.
