Deuteronomy 2:24

Rise ye up, take your journey, and pass over the river Arnon: behold, I have given into thine hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land: begin to possess it, and contend with him in battle.

Deuteronomy 2:24 (KJV)

Moses addresses the Israelites as they prepare to enter the Promised Land after forty years of wilderness wandering. In this verse, he recounts God’s command to engage in battle against Sihon, the Amorite king of Heshbon. The Arnon River served as a natural boundary between the Moabites and the Amorites, and Heshbon was a prominent city east of the Jordan River.

This command follows a series of instructions in which Israel was told not to meddle with Edom, Moab, and Ammon. Now, however, they are to contend with Sihon. The immediate context shows God also promises to put dread and fear of Israel upon the nations (Deuteronomy 2:25).

God assured the Israelites that He had given Sihon and his land into their hands. This was an act of divine providence and a fulfilment of God’s promise to give them the land. The command to “rise up” and “take your journey” indicates decisive action in response to God’s promise. The phrase “begin to possess it” underscores that God’s gift requires human obedience and effort.

God instructed the Israelites to begin to possess the land by contending with Sihon in battle. This indicated that they were required to engage in warfare to establish their authority over the land. The conquest involved both divine assistance and human effort.

The same event is recounted in Numbers 21:21-32, and Joshua 12:2 lists Sihon as a defeated king. These passages confirm the historical reality of the conquest and God’s sovereignty over nations and rulers.

This verse reminds us that God fulfils His promises and equips His people for the challenges they face. The Israelites’ battle against Sihon teaches us the importance of obedience to God’s commands and the need to actively engage in our spiritual journey to overcome obstacles and possess the blessings God has in store for us.

As believers, we should trust in God’s promises, recognising that He has already given us the victory through Christ (1 Corinthians 15:57). However, we must also be willing to step out in faith, confront challenges, and actively participate in God’s plan for our lives.

Deuteronomy 2:24 emphasises God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises to His people. It also highlights the need for active participation on our part as we face challenges in our spiritual journey. By trusting in God’s provision, obeying His commands, and engaging in the battles of life, we can experience the blessings and victories God has prepared for us.
