Ephesians 2:2

Listen to this article

“Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience”

Context:To understand Ephesians 2:2 better, it’s important to consider the context of the verse. The book of Ephesians was written by the apostle Paul to the church in Ephesus. In this particular chapter, Paul is addressing the Gentile believers, describing their former state of spiritual death and contrasting it with their new life in Christ.

Walking according to the course of this world:The verse begins by acknowledging the past state of the Ephesian believers, highlighting that they used to live in accordance with the ways of the world. This implies that they conformed to the sinful patterns and values of the society around them. Before coming to faith in Christ, they were influenced by worldly philosophies, desires, and behaviours.

The prince of the power of the air:The verse then introduces the “prince of the power of the air,” referring to Satan or the devil. Satan is described as having power and influence over the world and its systems, including its spiritual atmosphere. As the ruler of darkness, he seeks to deceive and lead people astray from God’s truth. This title emphasizes his control and authority over the fallen world system.

The spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:The verse concludes by mentioning “the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience.” This phrase highlights the active and influential role of the devil in the lives of those who reject God’s ways. The “children of disobedience” refers to those who continue to live in rebellion against God’s commands and live according to worldly desires rather than His will. The spirit at work in them is the spirit of disobedience, which aligns with Satan’s agenda.

Spiritual Application:Ephesians 2:2 serves as a reminder to believers of their former state and the power of God’s grace in their lives. It emphasizes the contrast between living according to the ways of the world under Satan’s influence and experiencing new life in Christ. It underscores the need for believers to resist conforming to the world’s standards and to be aware of the spiritual battles they face. It also highlights the importance of submitting to the Holy Spirit’s guidance, allowing Him to transform and renew their minds.

  • Overall, Ephesians 2:2 highlights the contrast between the old life in sin and the new life in Christ, reminding believers of the spiritual forces at work in the world. It serves as a call to live differently, not being conformed to the world but transformed by the renewing of their minds (Romans 12:2).
