Ephesians 4:2

“With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love.”

Context:The book of Ephesians was written by the apostle Paul to the church in Ephesus. It emphasizes the unity of believers in Christ and provides instructions for living a life worthy of their calling.

Attitude of Lowliness:The verse begins with the call to “lowliness.” Lowliness refers to humility, an essential virtue for believers. It involves having a modest opinion of oneself and recognizing our need for God’s grace. As followers of Christ, we should approach others with humility, considering them more important than ourselves (Philippians 2:3).

Attitude of Meekness:The next quality mentioned is “meekness.” Meekness is often misunderstood as weakness, but it actually implies strength under control. It involves gentleness, patience, and a willingness to submit to God’s will and the needs of others. Jesus described Himself as “meek and lowly in heart” (Matthew 11:29). As His followers, we are called to imitate His character.

Longsuffering:The verse also highlights the attribute of “longsuffering.” This term refers to patience in enduring difficult circumstances or people. In our interactions with others, we are called to bear with their faults and weaknesses, showing patience and understanding. This is an expression of God’s love, as He is patient with us (2 Peter 3:9).

Forbearing in Love:The final instruction in this verse is to “forbear one another in love.” Forbearing means to bear with, tolerate, or show patience toward one another. It involves recognizing that we are all imperfect and in need of grace. Love is the foundation for this forbearance. It is the selfless, sacrificial love that seeks the best for others. Love enables us to extend grace and forgiveness to those who may have wronged us.
