Esther 4:13

Then Mordecai commanded to answere Esther; Thinke not with thy selfe that thou shalt escape in the kings house, more then all the Iewes. Esther 4:13 (KJV)

The book of Esther is set during the time when the Israelites were in captivity under the rule of the Persian Empire. King Ahasuerus (also known as Xerxes I) was the ruler at that time. Esther, a young Jewish woman, became queen after winning a beauty contest organised by the king. Haman, a high‑ranking official in the king’s court, devised a plan to annihilate all the Jews in the kingdom. Mordecai, Esther’s cousin and guardian, discovered this plot and urged Esther to intercede with the king on behalf of their people.

Courageous Intercession: In Esther 4:13, Mordecai sends a message to Queen Esther, reminding her that her position as queen does not exempt her from the impending danger facing the Jews. He implores her to take action, knowing that her intercession is crucial for the survival of their people.

Awareness of Divine Appointments: Esther was in a unique position to influence the king’s decision, but she initially hesitated because approaching the king without being summoned was a risk that could cost her life. However, Mordecai reminds her that her rise to royalty was not a coincidence. God had placed her in that position “for such a time as this” (Esther 4:14).

The Perils of Complacency: Mordecai’s words to Esther carry an implicit warning against complacency. By suggesting that Esther would not be exempt from the danger facing the Jews, Mordecai challenges her to step out of his comfort zone and take action.

Unity and Solidarity: Mordecai’s message to Esther emphasizes the shared fate of the Jewish people. He reminds her that her safety does not lie in isolation but in the unity and solidarity of their community.

Application: Be courageous in interceding for others and taking a stand against injustice. Recognise and embrace the divine appointments in your life, trusting that God has a purpose for placing you where you are. Guard against complacency and be proactive in addressing the needs and struggles of others. Foster unity and solidarity within your community, supporting and standing alongside one another.

Esther 4:13 serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of taking action, using our positions for good, and standing up for what is right.
