Esther 6:10
Then the king saide to Haman, Make haste, and take the apparell, and the horse, as thou hast said, and doe euen so to Mordecai the Iew, that sitteth at the Kings gate: let nothing faile of all that thou hast spoken. Esther 6:10 (KJV)
The book of Esther tells the story of a Jewish girl named Esther who becomes queen of Persia and plays a crucial role in saving her people from a plot to annihilate them. In Esther 6 the king cannot sleep and asks that the royal chronicles be read to him. During this reading he discovers that Mordecai, a Jew, had previously uncovered a plot to assassinate him but had never been rewarded for it. At this point Haman, who harbored a deep hatred for Mordecai, enters the scene.
The verse begins with the king instructing Haman to “make haste” and to take the apparel and the horse, exactly as Haman had suggested. The purpose of this instruction is to honor and publicly recognize someone the king desires to honor—Mordecai, the Jew who sits at the king’s gate. The king commands that nothing fail of all that Haman has spoken, effectively ordering Haman to carry out his own suggestion in favor of Mordecai.
This command brings an unforeseen turn of events. Haman, expecting the king’s favor for himself, is shocked and humiliated when the honor is directed toward the very man he despises. The passage highlights both the sovereignty of God, who orchestrates circumstances that turn the tables on the wicked, and the role of human actions and coincidences that lead to justice and deliverance.
Several lessons emerge from this scene. First, God’s timing is perfect; when injustice seems to prevail, God can instantly reverse the situation, bringing vindication. Second, humility precedes honor: Haman’s pride leads to his downfall, while Mordecai’s humility results in exaltation, echoing the biblical principle that those who exalt themselves will be humbled and the humble will be lifted. Third, believers are called to trust in God’s providence. Even when enemies appear to have the upper hand, God works behind the scenes to bring about victory.
In conclusion, Esther 6:10 showcases an unexpected reversal that underscores divine control and the impact of human decisions. It reminds us to rely on God’s perfect timing, to practice humility, and to trust that God’s providence will ultimately bring justice and deliverance in every circumstance.
