Esther 6:3

And the king said, What honour and dignity hath been done to Mordecai for this? Then said the king’s servants that ministered unto him, There is nothing done for him.

Esther 6:3 (KJV)

The book of Esther is set during the Jewish exile in Persia. King Ahasuerus, also known as Xerxes I, ruled the vast empire. Earlier, Mordecai, a Jewish man, uncovered a plot to assassinate the king, and the matter was recorded in the royal chronicles (Esther 2:21-23).

In this verse, the king cannot sleep and orders the chronicles of his reign to be read to him. He hears about Mordecai’s loyal act and asks what honor and dignity have been given to him. The servants reply that nothing has been done for him. The king’s question shows his recognition that faithful service deserves reward, while the servants’ answer reveals the neglect Mordecai suffered. This moment is a turning point, for the king’s inquiry sets the stage for Mordecai’s unexpected honor.

This moment occurs the night before Haman plans to ask the king for permission to hang Mordecai. The king’s insomnia and the reading of records are ordinary events, yet they are divinely orchestrated. God works behind the scenes to ensure that faithful deeds are not forgotten. The honor Mordecai receives later (Esther 6:6-11) is a direct answer to this inquiry, showing that God exalts the humble and faithful. The passage also warns against ingratitude and the tendency to overlook the contributions of others.

This verse teaches several lessons. First, it highlights the importance of recognizing and rewarding those who act with integrity and loyalty. Second, it reminds us that God’s timing is perfect, even when justice seems delayed. Third, it encourages us to trust in God’s providence, knowing that He is working behind the scenes to bring about His purposes. No act of faithfulness is in vain, for God sees and will honor those who serve Him. We are also urged to be quick to honor those who serve faithfully, rather than overlooking their contributions.

God is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him (Hebrews 11:6). When human authorities overlook our service, we can rest in the assurance that God remembers. He brings about vindication and honor in His own way and time.
