Esther 9:15

For the Iewes that were in Shushan, gathered themselues together on the fourteenth day also of the moneth Adar, and slewe three hundred men at Shushan: but on the pray they laid not their hand. Esther 9:15 (KJV)

This verse is part of the historical account of the book of Esther, which records how Queen Esther, a Jewish woman, intervened to save her people from a plot of annihilation. In the narrative the Jews who were living in Shushan (also known as Susa) assembled on the fourteenth day of the month Adar, the twelfth month of the Jewish calendar, after King Ahasuerus issued a decree permitting them to defend themselves against those who sought their harm. The verse tells us that the Jews in Shushan were able to overcome their attackers and killed three hundred men in the city. The phrase “but on the prey they laid not their hand” (or “but on the spoil they laid not their hand”) makes clear that, although they were victorious, they took no spoils or possessions from the defeated enemies. Their primary aim was the safety and preservation of their community, not personal gain.

The passage highlights the courage, unity, and determination of the Jewish people in the face of danger. It also underscores their obedience to the instructions conveyed through Esther and Mordecai and embodied in the king’s decree, which authorized self‑defence while expressly prohibiting plundering. Throughout the book of Esther, God’s invisible hand is seen orchestrating events behind the scenes, preserving His people and demonstrating His faithfulness. The victory at Shushan stands as a testament to divine providence and the willingness of God to intervene on behalf of His people.

In application, Esther 9:15 reminds believers of the importance of standing up against injustice, remaining faithful to God, and prioritizing communal well‑being over selfish gain. It encourages us to trust in God’s providential care even when circumstances are challenging, and to act with integrity in accordance with God‑ordained principles.
