But the other Iewes that were in the kings prouinces, gathered themselues together, & stood for their liues, and had rest from their enemies, and slew of their foes seuenty and fiue thousand, but they laid not their handes on the pray. Esther 9:16 (KJV)

Context: The book of Esther tells the story of a young Jewish woman named Esther who becomes queen of Persia and plays a crucial role in saving her people from destruction. In chapter 9, the Jews were granted permission to defend themselves against their enemies who sought to harm them. Esther 9:16 specifically records the number of enemies slain throughout the Persian Empire, while surrounding verses describe the Jews’ gathering, their rest from foes, and their decision not to take spoils.

Unity and Defense: The verse highlights the unity of the Jewish people. Though scattered across the king’s provinces, they gathered together as one to stand for their lives. This collective resolve was a vital factor in their success and reminds believers that strength is found when God’s people unite in purpose.

Rest from Enemies: The passage notes that the Jews “had rest from their enemies,” signifying the relief and peace that followed the removal of the threat against them. It illustrates that when God’s people trust in Him and stand firm, they can experience true security and rest from hostile forces.

Divine Intervention: While the Jews fought, they “slew…seventy‑five thousand” of their foes. This staggering number underscores the remarkable victory granted by God. It demonstrates that when God fights on behalf of His people, seemingly impossible outcomes become possible, and His mighty hand is evident in deliverance.

Ethical Conduct: Importantly, the Jews “laid not their hands on the prey.” They refrained from taking spoils despite their triumph, showing a commitment to integrity and justice. This teaches that even in victory, believers are called to uphold ethical standards and resist the temptation to exploit success for personal gain.
