Listen to this article

To stablish this among them, that they should keepe the fourteenth day of the moneth Adar, and the fifteenth day of the same, yeerely: Esther 9:21 (KJV)

Context and Background: The book of Esther is set during the period when the Jews lived under Persian rule after the Babylonian exile. Esther, a Jewish woman, became queen of Persia through a series of events recorded in the biblical narrative. The main antagonist in the story is Haman, an official who sought to annihilate all the Jews in the Persian Empire. Through the actions described, Esther and her cousin Mordecai were able to save the Jewish people from this plot.

Significance of the Verse: Esther 9:21 is part of the concluding verses of the book of Esther, where Mordecai writes a letter to establish an annual celebration to commemorate the deliverance of the Jewish people from their enemies. The verse specifically mentions the fourteenth and fifteenth days of the month Adar as the days to be observed each year.

Observing the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Days of Adar: The establishment of the observance on the fourteenth and fifteenth days of Adar highlights the victory of the Jews over their enemies. These were the days when they had defended themselves and were granted rest from their adversaries. The Jews were commanded to celebrate these days as a time of feasting and joy.

Lessons from Esther 9:21:

Remembering God’s Deliverance: The establishment of this annual celebration reminds the Jewish people and us today of God’s faithfulness in delivering His people from their enemies. It serves as a reminder to remember and commemorate God’s faithfulness in our lives.

Communal Celebration: The celebration of Purim, which is the festival established based on this verse, is a time of joy, feasting, and celebration for the Jewish community. It emphasizes the importance of coming together as a community to rejoice in God’s deliverance and to support one another.

Perseverance and Victory: The celebration of Purim reminds us of the victory that can come from perseverance and trust in God. The Jews faced great adversity, but through their unity and faith, they overcame their enemies. This encourages us to trust in God and remain steadfast in the face of challenges.

Obedience to God’s Commands: The establishment of the annual celebration indicates the importance of obedience to God’s commands. The Jews willingly accepted Mordecai’s instructions and implemented them to remember and honor God’s deliverance. It serves as a reminder to be obedient to God’s Word and follow His instructions.

Application:

Gratitude for Deliverance: Reflect on the times when God has delivered you from challenging situations or enemies. Take time to express gratitude and thanksgiving to God for His faithfulness in your life.

Community Celebration: Consider the importance of coming together as a community to celebrate God’s faithfulness. Participate in communal celebrations or gatherings where you can rejoice with others and encourage one another.

Perseverance and Trust: When facing difficult circumstances, remember the story of Esther and the Jewish people. Be encouraged to persevere, trusting in God’s sovereignty and His ability to bring victory even in the face of seemingly impossible situations.

Obedience and Faithfulness: Observe the importance of obedience to God’s commands. Seek to align your life with God’s Word and follow His instructions with faith and trust, knowing that He is faithful to His promises.

Remember that the book of Esther is not only a historical account but also a reminder of God’s providence and faithfulness in our lives. May we learn from Esther’s example and trust in God’s guidance and deliverance in every situation we face.
