And Mordecai wrote these things, and sent letters vnto all the Iewes, that were in all the prouinces of the king Ahasuerus, both nigh & farre, Esther 9:20 (KJV)

Historical Background: The book of Esther is set during the Persian Empire after the Babylonian exile, when the Jewish people were living under the rule of King Ahasuerus (also known as Xerxes I). The narrative centers on a young Jewish woman, Esther, who becomes queen.

Mordecai’s Actions: In Esther 9:20 we see Mordecai, Esther’s cousin and guardian, taking a decisive step. He wrote a letter and sent it to all the Jews living in the provinces of the king, both near and far, likely after the people were granted the right to defend themselves against those who sought to harm them.

Unity and Communication: Mordecai’s decision to write and distribute the letters highlights the importance of unity and effective communication among God’s people. The correspondence served as a means of conveying vital information and rallying the Jewish community together.

Ensuring Awareness: By reaching Jews in every province, Mordecai ensured that no one would be left unaware of the events unfolding and the measures permitted for their protection. This broad awareness helped mobilize the people to stand up against their enemies.

Mordecai’s Leadership: The episode demonstrates Mordecai’s proactive and resourceful leadership. He took responsibility for the welfare of his people, and his actions played a significant role in the deliverance of the Jews from Haman’s plot.

Application: Esther 9:20 reminds believers of the importance of unity, communication, and leadership within the community of faith. It encourages us to take responsibility for the well‑being of others and to ensure that everyone is informed and included. As Mordecai’s letter united the Jewish people, we should strive to foster unity, support, and care for one another as members of God’s family.

Overall, the passage portrays Mordecai’s initiative to write and send letters as a vital act of leadership and communication. It underscores the significance of keeping the community informed and united, offering valuable lessons for us to apply in our own lives as followers of Christ.
