“Therefore the Jews of the villages, that dwelt in the unwalled towns, made the fourteenth day of the month Adar a day of gladness and feasting, and a good day, and of sending portions one to another.”

Esther 9:19 (KJV):Therefore the Jews of the villages, that dwelt in the unwalled towns, made the fourteenth day of the month Adar a day of gladness and feasting, and a good day, and of sending portions one to another.

Historical Context:The book of Esther is set during the time when the Jews were in exile in Persia. Esther, a Jewish girl, became queen of Persia and played a crucial role in saving her people from a plot to annihilate them.

The Feast of Purim:Esther 9:19 refers to the establishment of the feast of Purim. After the Jews successfully defended themselves against their enemies, they celebrated their deliverance. The fourteenth day of the month Adar was designated as a day of gladness and feasting. It was a time for rejoicing and showing gratitude to God for His faithfulness.

Unwalled Towns:The verse specifically mentions that the Jews in the villages and unwalled towns celebrated Purim. This highlights that the joy and celebration were not limited to the major cities but extended to every corner of the Jewish community. It emphasizes the inclusivity and unity among the Jewish people in commemorating their deliverance.

Sending Portions:Another important aspect of Purim mentioned in Esther 9:19 is the act of sending portions one to another. It was customary for people to exchange gifts of food with one another on this day. This practice serves as a reminder of the importance of sharing and caring for others, even in times of celebration.

  • Gratitude and Celebration:The Feast of Purim teaches us the value of expressing gratitude to God for His deliverance and celebrating His faithfulness in our lives. It is a reminder to rejoice and be thankful for the victories God has granted us.
  • Unity and Inclusivity:The participation of Jews from the villages and unwalled towns demonstrates the unity and solidarity within the community. As believers, we should foster unity among fellow believers and celebrate together, regardless of our backgrounds or circumstances.
  • Sharing and Generosity:The act of sending portions encourages us to be generous and share our blessings with others. It reminds us to be mindful of those in need and to extend a helping hand, especially during times of celebration and joy.

Overall, Esther 9:19 highlights the establishment of the Feast of Purim, emphasizing the joy, celebration, unity, and generosity that accompanied this annual commemoration of God’s deliverance. It teaches us important lessons about gratitude, inclusivity, and caring for others in times of celebration.
