Esther 9:24

Listen to this article

“Because Haman the son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the enemy of all the Jews, had devised against the Jews to destroy them, and had cast Pur, that is, the lot, to consume them, and to destroy them.”

Context and Background: Esther is a book in the Old Testament that tells the story of Esther, a Jewish girl who becomes queen of Persia and plays a crucial role in saving her people from destruction. Haman, mentioned in this verse, was a high-ranking official in the Persian empire who had plotted to annihilate the Jews. He used a casting of lots (Pur) to determine the date for their destruction.

The Enemy of the Jews: Haman is described as the enemy of all the Jews. He harboured a deep-seated hatred for the Jewish people and sought to exterminate them. His animosity towards the Jews stemmed from Mordecai’s refusal to bow down to him, as Mordecai was Esther’s cousin and guardian.

Haman’s Plan: Haman devised a scheme to annihilate the Jews throughout the Persian Empire. He cast lots to determine the most auspicious date for their destruction. This casting of lots, known as Pur, was a common practice in ancient times to seek guidance or make decisions. By casting Pur, Haman aimed to eliminate the Jews and wipe them out completely.

God’s Providence: Although the name of God is not mentioned in the Book of Esther, His providential hand is evident throughout the narrative. Despite Haman’s evil plans, God intervened to protect His people. The casting of lots might have seemed like a mere chance, but God was working behind the scenes to deliver the Jews from destruction.

Lessons and Application:

  • God’s Timing: The casting of lots by Haman illustrates the importance of God’s timing in our lives. Even when it appears that circumstances are determined by chance or the plans of wicked people, God is ultimately in control. He can turn the tables and bring about deliverance at the right time.
  • God’s Protection: The story of Esther reminds us that God is a defender of His people. He watches over them, even in times of great danger. As believers, we can find comfort in knowing that God is with us, providing protection and deliverance from our enemies.
  • Courage and Obedience: Esther’s bravery in approaching the king without being summoned teaches us the importance of courage and obedience. Sometimes, we may be called to take risks and stand up for what is right, even in the face of great opposition.
  • Trusting God’s Providence: Even when we cannot see God’s hand at work, we can trust in His providence. The Book of Esther reminds us that God is always working behind the scenes, orchestrating events for the good of His people. We can place our trust in Him, knowing that He is faithful to fulfil His promises.

In conclusion, Esther 9:24 highlights Haman’s plot to destroy the Jews through casting lots. This verse emphasises God’s providential intervention and the deliverance of His people. It teaches us valuable lessons about God’s timing, protection, courage, obedience, and the importance of trusting in His providence.
