Esther 9:26

Posted on 18 May at 15:20

“Wherefore they called these days Purim after the name of Pur. Therefore for all the words of this letter, and of that which they had seen concerning this matter, and which had come unto them.”

Context:The book of Esther tells the story of a Jewish girl named Esther who became queen of Persia and played a crucial role in saving her people from a plot to annihilate them. In Esther 9, the Jews successfully defend themselves against their enemies, and the day on which this victory occurred is established as the festival of Purim.

The Significance of Purim:The word “Purim” means “lots,” referring to the casting of lots by Haman, the antagonist of the story, to determine the day on which the Jews would be destroyed. However, through divine intervention, the Jews were victorious, and Purim commemorates their deliverance. It is celebrated annually on the 14th and 15th of the Hebrew month of Adar.

Recognizing Divine Intervention:The verse highlights the connection between the name “Purim” and the events described in the letter sent by Mordecai, Esther’s cousin and advisor, throughout the Persian Empire. The purpose of the letter was to explain the significance of these events and ensure that future generations would remember and celebrate God’s deliverance. It serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness and intervention on behalf of His people.

Remembering God’s Faithfulness:The celebration of Purim continues to this day as a time of joy, feasting, giving gifts to the poor, and reading the Book of Esther. It reminds the Jewish people of their history, how God protected them from destruction, and how He used Esther and Mordecai to accomplish His purposes. It encourages believers to trust in God’s faithfulness, even in times of great difficulty.

Application to Our Lives:Esther 9:26 serves as a reminder that God is actively involved in the affairs of His people. It teaches us the importance of remembering God’s faithfulness in our own lives and sharing those stories with future generations. It encourages us to trust in God’s providence and to seek His guidance and intervention in challenging situations.

In conclusion, Esther 9:26 highlights the establishment of the festival of Purim and emphasizes the importance of remembering and celebrating God’s faithfulness in delivering His people. It encourages us to trust in God’s intervention in our lives and to share our stories of His faithfulness with others.
