Exodus 2:2
And the woman conceived, and bare a son: and when she saw him that he was a goodly child, she hid him three months.
Exodus 2:2 (KJV)
Context
The book of Exodus continues the story of the Israelites after they moved to Egypt during Joseph’s time. It tells how God delivered them from slavery through Moses. At this moment, a new Pharaoh ruled Egypt and did not know Joseph (Exodus 1:8). He feared the growing number of Israelites, so he forced them into harsh labor and commanded that every Hebrew baby boy be thrown into the Nile (Exodus 1:22).
Meaning
The woman in this verse is Jochebed, the wife of Amram and the mother of Moses, Aaron, and Miriam. She belonged to the tribe of Levi, the priestly tribe. When she saw that her son was a “goodly child,” she hid him for three months. The Hebrew word translated “goodly” means fine, beautiful, or healthy. This was not just a mother’s pride; it was a sign of the child’s special nature. Her action directly defied Pharaoh’s murderous decree and showed her faith in God’s care. Jochebed’s choice was an act of courage, not mere instinct. She risked her own life to protect her son, trusting that God would honor her obedience.
Biblical connections
Hebrews 11:23 confirms that Moses’ parents hid him by faith because they saw he was a proper child and were not afraid of the king’s commandment. Stephen also describes Moses as “exceeding fair” in Acts 7:20, using words that mean “beautiful to God.” This shows that Moses’ comeliness was divinely given, marking him as a child set apart for God’s purpose. Jochebed’s faith worked within a time of severe oppression, and God used her courageous choice to begin His plan of deliverance for Israel. The birth of Moses was a key moment in redemptive history, setting the stage for the Exodus.
Application
Jochebed teaches us to value every human life and to trust God even when obedience to Him conflicts with human laws. She could not change the Pharaoh’s command, but she could protect her son for as long as possible. Her example encourages us to act faithfully in the small choices we face, believing that God sees and honors our trust. We may not see the full outcome, but God works through our faithful steps to accomplish His purposes. Like Jochebed, we can resist evil in practical ways, even when the situation seems hopeless.
Reflection
God’s faithfulness shines through this story. He protected Moses and later used him to lead His people out of Egypt. The same God who watched over Jochebed’s hidden child watches over us. When we face danger or difficulty, we can remember that God’s plans are never defeated by human power. He invites us to trust Him, as Jochebed did, and to believe that He is able to bring good even from the darkest circumstances.
