Exodus 2:1
And there went a man of the house of Levi, and took to wife a daughter of Levi.
Exodus 2:1 (KJV)
Context
Exodus is the second book of the Bible and tells how the Israelites were freed from slavery in Egypt. This verse opens the story of Moses’ birth during a time of harsh oppression. Pharaoh had ordered that Hebrew baby boys be killed (Exodus 1:22), so the events here carry great danger and hope. The verse is brief, but it introduces the parents of the one who would lead God’s people out of bondage.
Meaning
The man from the house of Levi is later named Amram, and the daughter of Levi is Jochebed (Exodus 6:20). The Levites were descendants of Levi, one of the twelve sons of Jacob. God set them apart for religious service, including the priesthood and care of the Tabernacle. Marrying within the tribe was common and helped preserve tribal identity and inheritance. This union was not unusual, yet God used it for a special purpose.
Biblical connections
This marriage prepared the way for Moses, who became the deliverer of Israel and the mediator of the Old Covenant. In this, Moses points to Jesus Christ, the mediator of the New Covenant, who frees people from the slavery of sin. The faith of Moses’ parents is later commended in Hebrews 11:23, because they hid him and were not afraid of the king’s command. Their courage shows that God’s redemptive plan worked through ordinary, faithful people. The Levitical priesthood, which came from this tribe, also points to the ultimate high priesthood of Christ.
Application
God often works through simple, everyday decisions. Amram and Jochebed made a faithful marriage and trusted God during a deadly time. Their obedience shaped the future of their family and of Israel. This reminds us that our daily choices, especially in marriage and family life, can serve God’s purposes even when we cannot see the outcome. We may not know the full result of our faithfulness, but God does.
Reflection
This verse may seem plain, but it shows God’s sovereignty and care. He chose an ordinary Levite couple to bring forth a great leader. Their story encourages us to trust that God can use our faithful steps, however small they appear, for extraordinary results in His plan. Even in times of fear and uncertainty, God is at work behind the scenes.
