Exodus 31:3
And I have filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship,
Exodus 31:3 (KJV)
Context
The book of Exodus tells how God rescued the Israelites from slavery in Egypt and led them through the wilderness. After they left Egypt, God called Moses to Mount Sinai and gave him careful instructions for building the tabernacle, a portable sanctuary where the people could worship Him during their journey. This was not a small task. The tabernacle and its furnishings required skilled hands and careful planning.
Meaning
In Exodus 31:2, God names Bezaleel from the tribe of Judah as the chief craftsman for this holy work. The next verse explains why: God says, “I have filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship.” This filling is not mainly for preaching or spiritual leadership. It is for practical, manual, and artistic skill. The phrase “spirit of God” here means divine enablement for creative and mechanical work. God Himself gives the ability to design, build, and decorate the tabernacle and its furnishings. This gifting is specific and practical, given for a particular purpose.
Biblical connections
This passage shows that God’s Spirit empowers people for all kinds of legitimate work, not only for religious tasks. The immediate context in Exodus 31:1-6 also names Aholiab, who worked alongside Bezaleel. Together they received skill to teach others and to complete every part of the tabernacle. This divine gifting is not the same as the New Testament indwelling of the Holy Spirit, which comes to every believer at salvation. Here, God specially equips chosen individuals for a task He has assigned. The broader narrative of Exodus 25-31 details the tabernacle’s construction, showing that this enablement was practical and specific to the task at hand.
Application
Exodus 31:3 teaches that when God calls someone to a task, He also supplies what is needed to do it. Bezaleel was not chosen because of his own reputation; God filled him with the necessary wisdom, understanding, knowledge, and craftsmanship. This reminds us that our talents and skills are gifts from God. Whether we work with wood, metal, cloth, or words, we can serve Him with excellence. We should seek His guidance and rely on His Spirit’s empowering, not only in church activities but in every honest occupation. God values excellence and skill in the work done for Him, and He personally fills and equips individuals for His purposes.
Reflection
God cares about the details of His work. He not only gave the plan for the tabernacle but also provided the people and the power to carry it out. The same God who filled Bezaleel is willing to equip us for the good works He prepares for us. We can trust that He will give us the ability to honor Him in our daily labor, and we can offer our skills back to Him with gratitude and humility.
