Exodus 36:16
And he coupled five curtains by themselves, and six curtains by themselves.
Exodus 36:16 (KJV)
Context
This verse describes part of the construction of the tabernacle, the portable sanctuary the Israelites built during their wilderness journey. The craftsmen, working under Bezalel and Oholiab, followed the pattern God gave to Moses. Here they coupled the goat hair curtains into two sets, one of five and one of six, exactly as the Lord had commanded in Exodus 26:9.
Meaning
The coupling of five curtains by themselves and six by themselves was not arbitrary. It fulfilled the specific divine instruction and ensured that the larger set would have the sixth curtain doubled at the front of the tent. This precise division and joining show that every detail of the tabernacle mattered to God. The careful work reminds us that obedience in small things is an act of worship.
Biblical connections
The two sets of curtains, though unequal in number, were joined to form one complete covering. This illustrates how believers from different backgrounds and with different gifts are united in the body of Christ. Just as the curtains were distinct yet formed one tabernacle, Christians are called to work together in unity to accomplish God’s purposes.
Application
God values excellence and order in His service. The skilled craftsmanship and precise execution of His instructions challenge us to give our best in everything we do for Him. The tabernacle’s layers of covering—goat hair, ram skins dyed red, and durable leather—also remind us of God’s protection and provision. As believers, we are called to live holy lives, set apart for His service, and to find our safety under His care.
Reflection
The tabernacle and its construction foreshadow Jesus Christ, who became the ultimate meeting place between God and humanity. The careful joining of the curtains points to the perfect work of redemption accomplished through Christ’s sacrifice. As we consider this verse, we are invited to reflect on how we can contribute to the unity of the church and honor God with our diligence and devotion.
