Exodus 26:9

And thou shalt couple five curtains by themselves, and six curtains by themselves, and shalt double the sixth curtain in the forefront of the tabernacle.

Exodus 26:9 (KJV)

The book of Exodus records the deliverance of Israel from slavery in Egypt and the establishment of the Mosaic covenant. In Exodus 26, God gives Moses detailed instructions for building the Tabernacle, a portable sanctuary that would be the dwelling place of God’s presence among His people during their wilderness journey. This verse specifically addresses the arrangement of the eleven curtains of goats’ hair that formed the second, outer covering of the Tabernacle (Exodus 26:7).

In Exodus 26:9, God instructs Moses to couple five curtains together as one unit and six curtains together as another unit. The sixth curtain in the second unit was to be doubled and placed in the forefront of the Tabernacle. This doubling was a practical provision to manage the extra length of the six-curtain set, ensuring the covering fit properly over the structure. The verse demonstrates God’s concern for precise, orderly construction of His dwelling place.

The coupling of the curtains into unified sets reflects the broader theme of unity in the Tabernacle’s construction, where various parts were joined to form one cohesive structure. The Tabernacle itself was divided into the Holy Place and the Most Holy Place, and the curtains formed part of its covering. The unity of the Tabernacle structure symbolizes the unity of God’s people in worship and service. Furthermore, the Tabernacle foreshadows Jesus Christ, who is the ultimate dwelling place of God among humanity. As believers are built together as the body of Christ (Ephesians 2:19-22), the curtains being coupled together signify the unity of believers in Christ.

  • Unity and Diversity: The coupling of the curtains in different configurations highlights the importance of unity and diversity within the community of believers. The five curtains represent one group, while the six curtains represent another. This arrangement signifies that though there may be diverse individuals or groups within the community, they are all united in their service and worship of God. As believers, we can learn to value and appreciate the diversity within the body of Christ, celebrating our differences while working together for God’s purposes.

  • Recognizing Leaders: The doubling of the sixth curtain and its placement in the forefront holds symbolic significance. It may signify its prominence and importance in the overall structure, and could represent the elevated position of certain individuals or leaders within the community who are called to play a significant role in leading and serving God’s people. We should respect and support those who are called to lead and serve the community, while also acknowledging the unique role they play.

  • Christ as Our Foundation: Just as the Tabernacle was the dwelling place of God’s presence among the Israelites, Jesus Christ is the foundation and center of our faith. We should continually seek to deepen our relationship with Him, recognizing His preeminence in our lives and allowing Him to guide and direct us in our journey.

The detailed instructions for the Tabernacle show that worship of God involves careful obedience to His specific commands. The precision of these instructions underscores that God’s presence among His people was to be approached with reverence and exact obedience. As we consider this verse, we are reminded that God cares about the details of our lives and our worship. May this deepen your understanding of the Tabernacle and encourage you in your walk with God.
