Exodus 39:18

Our Great High Priest

The high priest is a beautiful type of Jesus Christ, our great High Priest. Just as Aaron bore the names of the Israelites on his shoulders (a place of burden-bearing and strength) and over his heart (a place of affection and care), Jesus Christ bears His people today. The secure fastening of the golden chains reminds believers that our standing before God is not loose or precarious. We are tightly bound to Christ by unbreakable chains of divine love and eternal redemption. He intercedes for us continuously, carrying our burdens upon His shoulders of omnipotent power and holding our names close to His heart of infinite compassion.

Application for the Believer

This verse encourages us to recognize our secure position in Christ. When we face trials or feel disconnected, we can remember the imagery of the golden chains and the settings of gold. God has intricately and deliberately secured our names before Him; we are not forgotten or misplaced. Furthermore, as part of a royal priesthood, we are called to carry others in prayer, bearing the burdens of our brothers and sisters on our shoulders and holding their needs near to our hearts. The meticulous care with which these garments were crafted reminds us that God is a God of order, precision, and beauty, who cares about the details of our lives.
