Exodus 39:18

And the two ends of the two wreathen chains they fastened in the two ouches, and put them on the shoulderpieces of the ephod, before it.

The secure fastening meant the breastpiece, containing the Urim and Thummim for discerning God’s will, would not slip or fall. The gold speaks of divine glory and purity, while the braided form suggests unbreakable unity. The high priest bore the people on his shoulders, a place of strength and burden, and over his heart, a place of affection and care.
