Exodus 39:17
“And they put the two wreathen chains of gold in the two rings on the ends of the breastplate.”
The Sacred Construction
In the meticulous crafting of the high priest’s garments, every detail carried profound significance. Exodus 39:17 describes the secure attachment of the breastplate of judgment to the ephod. This intricately woven breastpiece—a nine-inch-square pouch bearing twelve precious stones engraved with the names of the twelve tribes of Israel—was designed to rest continually over the high priest’s heart. To ensure it remained steadfast, it was fastened to the ephod using two wreathen, or braided, chains of pure gold inserted into gold rings.
The Strength of the Golden Cords
The materials and design chosen for these chains reveal much about the security of God’s people. The chains were made of pure gold, a metal frequently associated in scripture with divine purity, righteousness, and incorruptibility. Furthermore, they were "wreathen"—braided tightly like ropes for maximum strength and durability. By firmly binding the breastplate to the ephod with unbreakable golden chains, the twelve tribes were securely attached to their mediator. Whenever the high priest entered the presence of God, he bore the names and burdens of the people. Because of the robust golden attachment, the breastplate would never become loose or displaced during his solemn service.
Christ, Our Great High Priest
This carefully crafted garment provides a powerful picture of Jesus Christ, the Great High Priest of the new covenant. Just as the ancient high priest carried the names of the Israelites upon his heart, firmly secured by chains of pure gold, so Christ continuously bears His people near His heart. The unbreakable wreathen chains foreshadow the divine power and eternal love that forever secure believers to their Savior. In Christ, the position of the believer is not loose, casual, or in danger of failing. It is an absolutely secure bond, upheld by His endless intercession and unchanging divine nature. We are safely anchored to the One who stands on our behalf before the Lord.
