Exodus 40:14

And thou shalt bring his sons, and clothe them with coats:

Exodus 40:14 (KJV)

This verse belongs to the closing instructions for setting up the tabernacle, the portable sanctuary where God promised to dwell among Israel. Here God commands Moses to bring Aaron’s sons and clothe them with coats as part of the consecration ceremony. This act prepares them for priestly service, a role given to the tribe of Levi.

“His sons” refers to Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar, the sons of Aaron. They belonged to the tribe of Levi and were appointed by God to serve as priests. The coats, or tunics, were part of the priestly garments described in Exodus 28:40, made for glory and beauty. Clothing them with these coats symbolized their consecration and readiness to minister before the Lord. The garments were holy, setting the priests apart as mediators between God and the people. Being properly clothed was essential for their service.

The same instruction appears in Exodus 29:8 during the ordination of the priests, showing the importance of this act. The priesthood was a special role given to the Levites, and their clothing marked them for holy service. In the New Testament, the book of Hebrews explains how Jesus Christ, as the ultimate High Priest, fulfilled and surpassed the Levitical priesthood. He offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice, giving believers direct access to God without human intermediaries. This verse points forward to Christ, who is both the fulfillment and the greater priest.

This verse teaches that worship and service require proper preparation. Just as the priests were clothed before ministering, believers need spiritual readiness. The coats point to the righteousness that comes through Christ, covering those who serve Him. God still calls His people to be set apart, not by special garments, but by a life consecrated to Him. Spiritual preparation involves daily dependence on God and a heart ready to obey His call.

  • Examine your own readiness for service.

  • Seek the covering of Christ’s righteousness in all you do.

  • Trust that God equips those He calls.

Consider how God prepares you for service. He does not leave His people unprepared. The same God who clothed Aaron’s sons equips believers today through Christ. This verse invites you to trust that God’s calling includes His provision, and that true service begins with being clothed in His righteousness. Let this truth encourage you to step forward in faith, knowing that God has already made you ready.
