Exodus 40:15

And thou shalt anoint them, as thou didst anoint their father, that they may minister unto me in the priest’s office: for their anointing shall surely be an everlasting priesthood throughout their generations.

Exodus 40:15 (KJV)

After the Israelites left Egypt, God gave Moses careful instructions for the Tabernacle, a portable tent where God’s presence would dwell among His people. The book of Exodus closes with the Tabernacle being set up and the priests being consecrated for service. In Exodus 40:12-14, God told Moses to wash Aaron and his sons, dress them in sacred garments, and anoint Aaron. Now, in verse 15, God commands Moses to anoint Aaron’s sons in the same way, so they could serve as priests.

Anointing meant pouring holy oil on a person’s head to show that God had chosen and empowered them for a special task. Here, the oil set Aaron’s sons apart for the priestly office. They could not minister before their anointing; the anointing was necessary for their service. The phrase “everlasting priesthood” does not mean the same men served forever. It means the priesthood would continue through Aaron’s descendants from generation to generation. This was not a temporary arrangement but a lasting institution for Israel.

This command echoes earlier instructions. In Exodus 28:41, God told Moses to anoint, consecrate, and sanctify Aaron and his sons to minister as priests. Exodus 30:30 repeats the command to anoint them. The anointing of Aaron’s sons also points forward to Jesus Christ, who is our eternal High Priest. Hebrews describes Jesus as a priest after the order of Melchizedek, a priesthood that is superior and everlasting. Jesus offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice and intercedes for us before the Father.

As believers, we are part of a royal priesthood (1 Peter 2:9). We are called to offer spiritual sacrifices and to serve God as His representatives in the world. Our service does not depend on human appointment but on God’s calling and anointing through the Holy Spirit. We can approach God with confidence because Jesus, our High Priest, has opened the way for us.

This verse reminds us that God calls and equips people for His work. The priests could not choose their own role; God chose them. In the same way, our service to God is a response to His call. We are set apart for His purposes, and our lives are to be lived as a holy offering to Him.
