Exodus 6:17

The sons of Gershon; Libni, and Shimi, according to their families.

Exodus 6:17 (KJV)

The book of Exodus tells how God freed the Israelites from slavery in Egypt and led them toward the Promised Land. In this verse, the writer records the family line of the Levites, focusing on the descendants of Gershon, the firstborn son of Levi. Levi was the third son of Jacob, also called Israel. This genealogy appears within the larger story of God reaffirming His covenant with Moses and commanding him to demand the release of the Israelites.

Gershon had two sons, Libni and Shimi. The verse says they were “according to their families,” meaning each son became the head of his own clan. From Libni came the Libnites, and from Shimi came the Shimites, as later confirmed in Numbers 3:21. This brief record shows the growth and continuation of the Levite line. It also establishes the historical framework for the Levitical priesthood and their service in Israel’s worship.

The Levites were set apart by God for a special role. Unlike the other tribes, they received no portion of land. Instead, they served in the tabernacle and assisted the priests. The Gershonites were one of three main divisions of the Levites, along with the Kohathites and the Merarites, each responsible for different aspects of the tabernacle’s transportation and maintenance. The same sons of Gershon appear in Numbers 3:18 and 1 Chronicles 6:17, confirming the consistency of the biblical record. This genealogy is placed within the redemptive narrative of Exodus, showing that God works through specific families to accomplish His purposes.

Genealogies in the Bible serve several purposes. They establish lineage and inheritance, provide historical and cultural context, and demonstrate God’s faithfulness to fulfill His promises. The preservation of the Levite lineage reminds us that God keeps His covenant. He had chosen the Levites for a specific purpose, and their continued existence reflects His faithfulness. The Levites were dedicated to serving in the tabernacle, and their service was essential for the worship and functioning of the community. This teaches us the importance of serving God and His people with humility and dedication in whatever roles we have been given.

Just as God had a specific purpose for the Levites, He also has a unique plan for each one of us. We can trust that God’s plan for our lives is intentional and that He equips us for the tasks He has called us to. Even in seemingly ordinary details like genealogies, we can see God’s providence and sovereign control over history. God works through generations to accomplish His purposes, and we should have faith that He is working in our lives and throughout history, even in ways we may not fully comprehend.

This verse may seem simple, but it carries a deep truth. God values every person and every family in His plan. He does not overlook the small details of our lives. The names Libni and Shimi are recorded forever in Scripture, reminding us that God knows each of us by name and has a purpose for our lives. As we read the surrounding chapters, we see how God used the Levites in the worship of Israel, and we are encouraged to serve faithfully in our own callings.
