Exodus 7:22
And the magicians of Egypt did so with their enchantments: and Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, neither did he hearken unto them; as the Lord had said.
Exodus 7:22 (KJV)
Context
This verse belongs to the account of the ten plagues, when God sent Moses and Aaron to demand the release of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. The Nile had just been turned into blood, a direct judgment against the river that Egypt depended on for life. Pharaoh watched this sign, yet he refused to obey.
Meaning
The magicians of Egypt copied the miracle through their secret arts, but their imitation was limited and deceptive. Their success gave Pharaoh a reason to dismiss the warning, even though the true power behind the sign was God’s. The verse says Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he did not listen, just as the Lord had predicted. This hardening was both Pharaoh’s own stubbornness and, in later passages, God’s judicial response to his rebellion (Exodus 7:13). The magicians’ counterfeit did not lead them to repentance or acknowledgment of God’s supremacy. Instead, it provided a pretext for unbelief, showing how imitations can blind people to the truth.
Biblical connections
The magicians could reproduce only the first plague; they failed at later ones (Exodus 8:18-19). This shows that counterfeit signs have limits. The hardening of Pharaoh’s heart is a recurring theme in Exodus, reminding readers that persistent refusal to heed God leads to greater blindness. God’s word through Moses was fulfilled exactly, proving that His purposes advance even through human resistance. The plagues continued to unfold according to God’s plan, despite Pharaoh’s stubbornness.
Application
Pharaoh’s example warns against pride and self-deception. When people see clear evidence of God’s power, they may still choose to ignore it, especially if they find a plausible excuse. The magicians’ imitation is a reminder that false signs can deceive, but they never carry divine authority. Believers should examine their own hearts for stubbornness and respond quickly to God’s voice.
Do not let counterfeit wonders weaken your trust in God’s true power.
Do not harden your heart when God speaks clearly through His word or circumstances.
Remember that God’s plan moves forward even when people resist Him.
Reflection
This passage calls for humility and obedience. The same heart that can be softened by grace can also be hardened by repeated refusal. God’s power is supreme, and His word is certain. The wise response is to yield to Him before resistance becomes a fixed habit. Even when human leaders oppose Him, God’s purposes remain unstoppable, and His promises stand firm.
