Ezekiel 21:10

It is sharpened to make a sore slaughter; it is furbished that it may glitter: should we then make mirth? it contemneth the rod of my son, as every tree.

Ezekiel 21:10 (KJV)

This verse belongs to Ezekiel’s prophecy of judgment against Jerusalem. God pictures His judgment as a sword being prepared for a severe slaughter. The surrounding chapters show that this judgment came because of the people’s persistent sin and rebellion against Him.

The sharpened sword represents the certainty and severity of divine judgment. A sword that is furbished, or polished, glitters so that it may be seen clearly. This imagery shows that God’s judgment is not hidden or uncertain; it is ready and inevitable.

The question “should we then make mirth?” challenges any attitude of indifference or frivolity. When judgment is imminent, rejoicing is inappropriate. The proper response is solemn reflection and humility before God.

The final phrase, “it contemneth the rod of my son, as every tree,” means the sword treats every other rod or staff with contempt. The “rod of my son” likely refers to the king of Judah or the nation itself. No human authority, not even the Davidic monarchy, can withstand God’s judgment. Every earthly power is like a common tree before His sword.

This passage echoes the principle found throughout Scripture that God opposes the proud and brings down human power. The polished sword also displays God’s glory and justice, reminding readers that His holiness demands a response of reverence.

This verse warns against presumption and complacency. It calls believers to take God’s warnings seriously and to examine their own lives. Rather than making mirth in the face of sin, the appropriate response is repentance and faith. Human pride and self-confidence are futile before God’s sovereign will.

The sword of judgment is a sober reminder of the seriousness of sin. Yet for those who respond to God’s warnings with humility, this same passage becomes a call to trust in His justice and to live with reverent awe before Him.
