Ezekiel 3:13
I heard also the noise of the wings of the liuing creatures that touched one another, and the noise of the wheeles ouer against them, and a noise of a great rushing. Ezekiel 3:13 (KJV)
“And when they went, I heard the noise of their wings, like the noise of great waters, as the voice of the Almighty, the voice of speech, as the noise of an host: when they stood, they let down their wings.”
Context and Background:
Ezekiel was a prophet who received visions and messages from God during the time of the Babylonian exile. He was among the exiles in Babylon, and his prophecies were meant to bring a message of judgment and hope to the Israelites.
Understanding the Verse:
In this particular verse, Ezekiel describes one of his visions. He hears the noise of the wings of the living creatures and, elsewhere in the chapter, the noise of the wheels that moved with them. These elements are part of a larger vision described in detail in Ezekiel 1.
Symbolism and Interpretation:
Wings of the living creatures: In Ezekiel’s vision he sees four living creatures, each with four faces (Ezekiel 1:5‑6). These creatures are later identified as cherubim (Ezekiel 10:20). The noise of their wings touching one another could represent their movement and activity as they serve God.
Wheels: Ezekiel also sees wheels beside the living creatures (Ezekiel 1:15‑21). The wheels are described as having rims full of eyes and moving together with the living creatures. The noise associated with the wheels could symbolize divine movement and providential control.
Great rushing noise: This represents the powerful and majestic presence of God. Throughout Ezekiel’s visions there are frequent descriptions of God’s glory and the overwhelming experience of being in His presence.
Application and Lessons:
God’s sovereignty and control: The imagery of the wings and the wheels reminds us that God is in control of all things. Just as the wheels moved in unison with the living creatures, God orchestrates events and directs the course of history according to His divine plan.
The awe‑inspiring presence of God: The noise of the great rushing reminds us of the majesty and power of God. It serves as a reminder of His holiness and the need for reverence and awe in our approach to Him.
Active engagement in God’s work: The movement of the wings and the noise they create indicate the activity and service of the living creatures. As believers we are called to be actively engaged in God’s work, serving Him faithfully and fulfilling the purposes He has for us.
Connecting to the bigger picture:
Ezekiel’s visions and prophecies serve as a reminder of God’s faithfulness, even in times of judgment and exile. Despite the challenges and hardships faced by the Israelites, God remained present and continued to communicate with His people through prophets like Ezekiel. The vision in this verse is part of a larger message of hope and restoration that Ezekiel delivers to the exiles.
