Ezekiel 3:14

Listen to this article

“So the spirit lifted me up, and took me away, and I went in bitterness, in the heat of my spirit; but the hand of the LORD was strong upon me.”

Context:To understand Ezekiel 3:14 better, it’s important to look at its context. Ezekiel was a prophet who received visions and messages from God during the Babylonian exile of the Israelites. In chapter 3, God called Ezekiel to be a watchman for the house of Israel, to deliver messages of warning and judgment to the people.

The Spirit lifting Ezekiel up:In this verse, Ezekiel describes how the Spirit of the Lord lifted him up. This is not the first time we see Ezekiel being lifted up by the Spirit. In Ezekiel 2:2, he also experienced a similar encounter. This lifting up symbolises the divine enabling and empowerment of Ezekiel for his prophetic mission. It shows that Ezekiel’s ability to fulfil his calling came from God and was not his own doing.

Bitterness and the heat of the spirit:Ezekiel’s emotions are described as “bitterness” and “heat of the spirit” as he went. These emotions could be a reflection of the weight and seriousness of the message he had to deliver. The bitterness may also indicate Ezekiel’s understanding of the impending judgment and the people’s resistance to hearing and responding to God’s message. It was a heavy burden for him to bear, knowing the consequences of disobedience.

The hand of the Lord:Despite the bitterness and the heaviness of the mission, Ezekiel acknowledges that the hand of the Lord was strong upon him. The hand of the Lord represents God’s power, authority, and guidance. It signifies that God’s divine presence and strength were with Ezekiel, empowering him to carry out his prophetic ministry effectively.

Application:As believers, we can draw some lessons from Ezekiel 3:14. Firstly, it reminds us that when God calls us to a specific task or mission, He equips and empowers us for that purpose. We can trust in His guidance and strength to fulfil what He has called us to do. Secondly, it teaches us that following God’s calling may not always be easy. There may be challenges, opposition, and a burden to bear, but we can find comfort and strength in knowing that the hand of the Lord is upon us. Finally, Ezekiel’s example encourages us to be faithful in delivering God’s message, even if it is difficult or unpopular, trusting that God’s purposes will ultimately prevail.

  • Summary:Ezekiel 3:14 highlights the empowering presence of God’s Spirit in Ezekiel’s life, the heaviness of the prophetic mission, and the assurance of God’s strong hand upon him.
