Ezekiel 37:4

Again he said unto me, Prophesy upon these bones, and say unto them, O ye dry bones, hear the word of the Lord.

Ezekiel 37:4 (KJV)

Ezekiel, a prophet called by God, delivered messages to the exiled Israelites in Babylon. In this vision, he finds himself in a valley filled with dry bones, symbolizing the spiritual condition of Israel—hopelessness, despair, and spiritual death. The bones represent the house of Israel in national desolation. The question God poses in verse 3, “Son of man, can these bones live?” sets the stage for the command that follows.

In verse 4, God instructs Ezekiel to prophesy to the dry bones, meaning to speak God’s words and declare His message. The Hebrew phrase “prophesy upon” these bones means to foretell that they shall live, telling others of it and also speaking to the bones themselves. Ezekiel is commanded to say, “O ye dry bones, hear the word of the Lord.” This emphasizes the power and authority of God’s word. The command to the dry bones to hear is the word of prophecy concerning them, as the Jews in Babylon heard. It implies that spiritual restoration comes through hearing and obeying God’s message. The passage demonstrates that God’s word, spoken through His prophet, has power to bring life to the dead.

The vision continues in Ezekiel 37:5-10, where the bones come together, bone to bone, then sinews and flesh cover them, but they are still lifeless until Ezekiel prophesies to the breath to come from the four winds and breathe into them, and they live. This shows that God’s word brings life in stages, and that the Spirit is essential for full restoration.

While the primary context is the restoration of Israel, there are applications for today:

  • Spiritual Revival: Just as God brought life to the dry bones, He has the power to bring spiritual revival in our lives. We need to actively listen to God’s word and respond in obedience, allowing Him to breathe life into our spiritual walk.

  • Proclamation of God’s Word: Like Ezekiel, we are called to be messengers of God’s word. We should share the message of hope, salvation, and restoration found in the Scriptures with those who are spiritually dead or struggling in their faith.

  • God’s Power in Hopeless Situations: This passage reminds us that even in the most hopeless situations, God has the power to bring transformation. No matter how dire our circumstances, we can trust in God’s ability to breathe life into dead areas of our lives.

  • Faith in God’s Promises: Ezekiel’s obedience to prophesy to the dry bones reflects his faith in God’s promises. We should also have faith in God’s promises and trust that He will fulfil them in His perfect timing.

Ezekiel 37:4 teaches us about God’s power to bring revival and restoration in the midst of hopelessness. It encourages us to listen to God’s word, proclaim it to others, have faith in His promises, and trust in His ability to breathe life into every area of our lives. The same word that spoke life into dry bones still speaks today, calling the spiritually dead to hear and live.
