Ezekiel 41:8

I saw also the height of the house round about: the foundations of the side chambers were a full reed of six great cubits.

Ezekiel 41:8 (KJV)

In Ezekiel 41, the prophet receives a detailed vision of a temple, with precise measurements given for its walls, chambers, and courts. This verse focuses on the height of the house round about and the foundations of the side chambers. The phrase “height of the house round about” refers to the side chambers that surrounded the temple, not the temple itself. These chambers were built in three stories, and the verse notes the height of the highest storey, though that exact measurement is not given. The foundations of these side chambers were a full reed of six great cubits.

A “great cubit” was a long cubit, a cubit and a handbreadth, making the measurement approximately 10.5 feet (about 3.2 meters). This foundation was a raised base or platform that encircled the temple and served as the support for the side rooms. The side chambers were built in three stories, and as they rose, they became larger, with the middle storey being larger than the lowest by a cubit. The precise measurements and detailed description underscore the importance of reverence and careful attention to God’s instructions and design.

The temple represented God’s presence among His people and was a place of worship and sacrifice. The vision of the temple, with its exact specifications, points to the order and holiness of God’s dwelling place. The detailed description of the temple in Ezekiel’s vision partly related to the material temple to be rebuilt and partly, in a mystical sense, to the spiritual temple of God, the church of Christ. This connection to the church finds its clearest expression in the New Testament, where believers are described as the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).

For a fuller understanding of Ezekiel’s message, studying the entire book is recommended. Studying the entire book of Ezekiel will provide a broader understanding of the prophecies, visions, and messages conveyed by the prophet Ezekiel, which ultimately point to God’s sovereignty, judgment, restoration, and His plan for the future. Consulting multiple translations, commentaries, and trusted spiritual leaders can further enrich biblical study. Remember, Bible study is a process of seeking wisdom and understanding, so it is always beneficial to consult various translations, commentaries, and seek guidance from trusted spiritual leaders to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the Scriptures.
