Ezekiel 43:6

And I heard him speaking unto me out of the house; and the man stood by me.

Ezekiel 43:6 (KJV)

Ezekiel 43:6 sits within a larger vision given to the prophet Ezekiel during the Babylonian exile. In chapters 40–43, Ezekiel sees a detailed vision of a future temple, which represents the restored dwelling place of God among His people. Just before this verse, the glory of the LORD has entered the temple through the east gate, and the Spirit has brought Ezekiel into the inner court.

In verse 6, Ezekiel hears someone speaking to him from inside the house—the temple—while a man stands beside him. This man is likely the angelic guide who had been measuring the temple with a measuring line. The voice from the house is identified in the commentary as Jehovah the Father, the God of Israel, whose glory had entered the temple. This divine communication emphasizes direct revelation from God to His prophet, a recurring theme throughout Ezekiel.

The house refers to the temple that Ezekiel sees in his vision. The voice speaking from the house is the voice of God, who is communicating with Ezekiel and providing him with instructions and revelations. The man standing by Ezekiel is not explicitly identified in this verse, but he could be an angel or another supernatural being sent by God to assist Ezekiel and guide him through the vision. The presence of the man beside Ezekiel provides continuity with the earlier vision, showing that the prophetic guide remains present during this divine utterance.

This verse highlights that God speaks from His dwelling place, and His words are to be received not as human words but as the word of God. The return of God’s glory into the temple is followed by the sin of Israel hindering God’s presence, and the prophet is exhorted to repentance and observation of the law of the house. Thus, this verse serves as a pivotal moment where the prophet, standing in the presence of the divine glory, receives direct communication from God.

The vision of the temple represents God’s plan for the future restoration of His people and the reestablishment of His presence among them. This points to the hope and promise of a renewed relationship between God and His people. The intimate communication between God and His chosen servants is a recurring theme, as God desires to speak to His people and reveal His plans and purposes.

  • Seek God’s Voice: Just as Ezekiel heard God speaking, we should also seek to hear God’s voice through prayer, studying His Word, and cultivating a personal relationship with Him.

  • Trust in Divine Guidance: When faced with challenges or uncertainties, we can rely on God’s guidance and trust that He will lead us in the right direction.

  • Embrace God’s Restoration: Ezekiel’s vision of the restored temple reminds us of God’s desire to restore and renew every aspect of our lives. We should embrace God’s work of restoration, both individually and collectively, and surrender to His plans and purposes.

The presence of the man by Ezekiel’s side symbolizes God’s guidance and support. Even in challenging or overwhelming situations, God provides assistance and companionship to those who seek Him.
