Galatians 3:14

That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

Galatians 3:14 (KJV)

Paul writes to the Galatians to counter the false teaching that Gentile believers must follow the law of Moses, including circumcision, to be saved. He argues that justification comes through faith in Christ, not by works of the law. He points back to Abraham, who was justified by faith, and shows that the promise made to him finds its fulfillment in Christ.

The verse states that Christ’s redemptive work had a twofold purpose. First, it was so that the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ. This blessing is the same blessing Abraham enjoyed: justification by faith, counted righteous through the righteousness of Christ. It refers to the covenant promise God made to Abraham, that in him and in his seed, identified as Christ, all nations would be blessed (Genesis 12:3). Through Christ, this promised blessing is now extended to the Gentiles.

Second, the purpose was that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. The Holy Spirit is given to believers as a seal and guarantee of their salvation (Ephesians 1:13-14). This promise is received by faith, not by observing the law.

The promise of the Spirit is directly tied to the blessing of Abraham. In the Old Testament, the Spirit was given to specific individuals for specific tasks, but here the Spirit is promised to all who believe in Christ. This marks a new era in God’s redemptive plan, where the Spirit indwells every believer, Jew and Gentile alike.

This verse assures believers that salvation and the reception of the Spirit are through faith in Christ alone, not through adherence to religious customs or human effort. It calls us to trust in Christ’s finished work on the cross, and to live by the Spirit, who empowers us to walk in obedience and bear fruit for God’s glory.

How often do we slip into thinking that our standing with God depends on our performance? Galatians 3:14 reminds us that the blessing of justification and the gift of the Spirit come through faith. Let us rest in Christ, who became a curse for us, so that we might receive the promised Spirit and live as children of Abraham by faith.
