Galatians 4:18

But it is good to be zealously affected always in a good thing, and not only when I am present with you.

Galatians 4:18 (KJV)

The Apostle Paul wrote the letter to the Galatians to counter false teachers who were distorting the gospel of grace by requiring adherence to the law, particularly circumcision. These teachers sought to alienate the Galatians from Paul and the true gospel. In this verse, Paul contrasts their improper zeal with the proper zeal that should be directed toward what is good.

The phrase “zealously affected” indicates an intense passion or fervor. Paul commends the Galatian believers for their enthusiasm for the gospel, particularly when he was present with them. However, he encourages them to maintain this zeal at all times, not just when he was physically present. The key challenge is that this zeal should be constant, rooted in the truth of God’s Word, and not dependent on external circumstances or the presence of human leaders.

Paul’s exhortation echoes the broader biblical theme of wholehearted devotion to God. The Galatians had shown enthusiasm when Paul was with them, but they were now being swayed by false teaching in his absence. This verse underscores the importance of a consistent, self-motivated devotion to what is good, grounded in the truth of the gospel.

  • Continual Zeal: The verse challenges us to examine our own zeal for the things of God. Are we passionate and fervent in our faith even when no one is watching? Our commitment to God should not be limited to specific times or circumstances but should be a consistent and ongoing aspect of our lives.

  • Rooted in Truth: It is essential to ensure that our zeal is grounded in the truth of God’s Word. False teachings and distractions can lead us astray. By studying the Scriptures and cultivating a deep understanding of God’s truth, we can maintain a steady and unwavering zeal for the things that please Him.

  • Self-Motivated Zeal: We should not rely on the presence or influence of others to maintain our zeal. Our motivation should come from within, driven by our love for God and our desire to honor Him. Even when we are alone or facing opposition, our zeal should remain steadfast.

  • Good Works: While the verse specifically mentions being zealously affected “in a good thing,” it is important to note that genuine zeal will lead to good works. Our passion for God should translate into a life characterized by love, compassion, and service to others.

Let us strive to maintain our passion for the truth of the gospel, rooted in God’s Word, and motivated by our love for Him, regardless of our circumstances or the presence of others.
