Genesis 2:21
And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;
Genesis 2:21 (KJV)
Context
This verse follows Adam’s naming of the animals, when no suitable helper was found among them. God then acted directly to create a companion for him. The event prepares for the presentation of Eve to Adam in the next verse and for the first statement about marriage.
Meaning
The deep sleep was not ordinary tiredness; God caused it to fall upon Adam. This shows that Adam took no active part in forming Eve. The creation of the woman was entirely God’s work, displaying His sovereign power and direct care. The word translated as “rib” can also mean “side,” suggesting that Eve was taken from Adam’s own body. This points to their deep connection and mutual dependence. God then closed up the flesh, showing His careful attention to Adam’s wholeness. Nothing was left incomplete or harmed.
Biblical connections
Adam’s deep sleep looks ahead to the death of Christ. Just as a sleep-like state led to the formation of Eve, Christ’s sacrificial death on the cross brought forth the Church, His bride. The New Testament draws this connection in Ephesians 5:25-27, where Christ’s love for the Church is compared to the union of husband and wife. This typology is not a minor detail; it reveals God’s consistent pattern of bringing life and blessing through apparent weakness.
Application
This verse teaches that God is intimately involved in forming human relationships. He does not leave our need for companionship to chance. Just as He provided for Adam, He provides for us according to His perfect plan. The unity of man and woman, created from one flesh, calls us to honor marriage as a sacred covenant. It also reminds us that our deepest needs are met by God’s deliberate action, not by our own effort.
Reflection
Consider how God has worked in your own life to bring the right people and circumstances at the right time. Adam slept, and God acted. Sometimes we must rest from our striving and trust God to do what only He can do. The same God who closed Adam’s flesh and formed Eve is at work today, caring for every detail of our lives.
