Genesis 2:4
These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens,
Genesis 2:4 (KJV)
Context
Genesis 2:4 closes the grand account of creation in Genesis 1 and opens a closer look at the making of humanity and the Garden of Eden. The verse acts as a hinge, turning the reader from the whole cosmos to the specific story of man and woman.
Meaning
The phrase “These are the generations” introduces a historical record of origins. Here it names the account of the heavens and the earth. The words “when they were created” point back to the initial state of all things as God brought them into being. “In the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens” stresses that creation happened within a definite time. The word “day” may mean a literal 24-hour period or a longer era, but either way it marks a real moment in history. This verse also affirms that the creation account is a unified history, with Genesis 2 providing specific details about the making of mankind.
Biblical connections
The title “LORD God” (YHWH Elohim) joins God’s covenant name with His role as Creator. This name appears throughout Genesis 2, showing His personal care in forming Adam and Eve. The same “generations” pattern later introduces the family records of Adam (Genesis 5:1), linking the creation account to the genealogies that follow.
Application
This verse reminds readers that God is both the majestic Creator of the universe and the personal Lord who shapes each life. Because He made the heavens and the earth, He deserves trust in every detail of daily living.
Reflection
Consider how the same God who spoke the stars into place also formed you with intention. Let this truth shape your sense of purpose and security.
