Genesis 2:5

And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the Lord God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground.

Genesis 2:5 (KJV)

This verse describes the earth before humanity existed. No cultivated field plants or grain crops had grown yet. Two reasons are given: the LORD God had not sent rain, and there was no man to till the ground. The title “the LORD God” joins God’s sovereign power as Creator with His personal, covenant faithfulness toward people.

The absence of rain points to a unique early climate. Genesis 2:6 explains that a mist or fountain rose from the earth to water the ground. So God provided moisture directly, showing His intimate care in preparing the land. The lack of a human worker reveals that God designed the earth for human stewardship. Work was not a result of sin; it was a noble calling given before the Fall. God’s provision and human labor were meant to work together from the beginning.

In Genesis 1, God created vegetation on the third day. Here the focus is on cultivated plants that need human care. This distinction harmonizes the two creation accounts. The verse also sets the stage for Adam’s creation and the Garden of Eden, showing God’s orderly purpose. It reminds us that God prepared the earth to sustain life before mankind existed.

Human effort and natural growth depend on God’s blessing. Labor alone cannot produce a harvest without His provision, yet God honors human activity by making it His chosen instrument. Believers should approach daily work with gratitude, humility, and reverence, recognizing it as a sacred trust under God’s wisdom. This truth gives dignity to every honest task.

God prepared the earth to sustain life before mankind existed. This reminds us that He is both sovereign and generous. Our work partners with His provision, and every productive task carries dignity when done for Him. He is worthy of our trust and praise.
