Genesis 35:20

And Jacob set a pillar upon her grave: that is the pillar of Rachel’s grave unto this day.

Genesis 35:20 (KJV)

Genesis 35 records Jacob’s journey with his family from Bethel toward Ephrath, also called Bethlehem. On the way, Rachel, Jacob’s beloved wife, went into labor and gave birth to Benjamin. She died during childbirth. This verse records Jacob’s response: he set up a pillar on her grave. In the ancient Near East, people often raised pillars or stones to mark important places and remember significant events. Jacob’s action was a personal act of grief and love, a tangible way to honor Rachel and mark her resting place.

The pillar was not an altar or a place of sacrifice; it was a memorial stone. It showed Jacob’s deep respect for Rachel and his sorrow at losing her. The verse says the pillar remained “unto this day,” meaning it was still known when Genesis was written. This detail shows that the memorial lasted and kept Rachel’s memory alive for future generations. The pillar became a landmark, a lasting sign of a life that mattered. It reminds us that remembering those we have lost is a meaningful and enduring practice.

Rachel’s grave was near Bethlehem, a town later connected to the birth of Christ (Matthew 2:1). This link reminds us that God’s plan continued through sorrow. Jacob did not stay at the grave forever; he continued his journey after mourning. Grief and remembrance are part of the pilgrim life of God’s people, but they do not stop the journey of faith. The pillar stood as a quiet witness, yet the narrative moves forward, showing that loss and hope can exist together in God’s purposes.

Jacob’s example teaches us to honor those we have lost. Creating a memorial, such as a grave marker or a special tradition, can help us remember and cherish loved ones. It also reminds us to value our relationships while people are still alive. Express love and gratitude now, not only after loss. Rachel’s death shows the brevity of life; none of us know when our time will end. Live each day with purpose and prioritize what matters most.

  • Remember and honor loved ones who have passed away.

  • Show love and appreciation to family and friends while they are with you.

  • Recognize that life is short and live with urgency and meaning.

The pillar on Rachel’s grave was a simple stone, yet it carried great meaning. It spoke of love, loss, and hope. In our own lives, small acts of remembrance can testify to God’s faithfulness through difficult times. They remind us that even in sorrow, God walks with us and His purposes continue. The memorial did not erase the pain, but it gave a place for grief and a way to remember. As we face our own losses, we can trust that God sees our sorrow and remains with us on the journey.
