Genesis 35:26

And the sons of Zilpah, Leah’s handmaid; Gad, and Asher: these are the sons of Jacob, which were born to him in Padan–aram.

Genesis 35:26 (KJV)

Genesis 35 records Jacob’s return to Bethel, where he built an altar and renewed the covenant God made with him. There God gave him the new name Israel. This verse closes the list of Jacob’s sons born in Padan-aram, the region where he lived with his uncle Laban. It names Gad and Asher as the children of Zilpah, Leah’s handmaid.

In that culture, a wife could give her handmaid to her husband to bear children on her behalf. Through Zilpah, Leah gained two sons. The name Gad means “fortune” or “luck,” and Asher means “happy” or “blessed.” Their descendants became two of the twelve tribes of Israel. The tribe of Gad settled east of the Jordan in Gilead, while Asher’s tribe lived along the Mediterranean coast.

This verse completes the record of Jacob’s sons born in Padan-aram; only Benjamin was born later, in Canaan. The twelve sons became the heads of the twelve tribes, fulfilling God’s promise to make Jacob a great nation. The mention of Padan-aram ties this family list to the earlier years with Laban, showing how God worked through ordinary and imperfect family circumstances.

God’s plan often advances through humble and unexpected people. Zilpah was a servant, yet her sons became tribal founders. This reminds us that God values every person and can use any situation to accomplish His purposes. We need not be prominent to play a meaningful part in His story.

How does knowing that God used a handmaid’s sons to build His nation encourage you to trust Him with your own circumstances? Even when life seems ordinary or difficult, God remains faithful to His promises.
