Genesis 35:25

And the sons of Bilhah, Rachel’s handmaid; Dan, and Naphtali:

Genesis 35:25 (KJV)

This verse appears in the list of Jacob’s twelve sons recorded after his return to Bethel. There, God renewed the covenant promises first given to Abraham and Isaac. The list names the children of each mother, showing that the twelve tribes of Israel were complete.

Bilhah was Rachel’s servant, given to her by Laban. When Rachel could not bear children, she gave Bilhah to Jacob as a wife, so that Bilhah might have children on Rachel’s behalf. Bilhah bore two sons, Dan and Naphtali. Rachel named them, and their names reflect her words at their birth. Dan means “he judged,” and Naphtali means “my wrestling.” This verse records their place in the family line.

The same practice appears earlier with Sarah and Hagar in Genesis 16. The Bible reports these events without approving or condemning them. The inclusion of Bilhah’s sons among the twelve tribes shows that God’s purposes did not depend on perfect family arrangements. All twelve sons, whatever their mothers’ status, became patriarchs of Israel. The later mention of Bilhah’s descendants in Genesis 46:25 confirms their lasting place.

God worked through jealousy, rivalry, and human custom to build His people. Readers today may find these family practices troubling, but the text invites trust in God’s faithfulness even when human choices are flawed. The covenant promises moved forward through this very family.

God’s plans are not stopped by human weakness. The same God who kept His word to Jacob continues to keep His word to His people. This brief record reminds us that every person in God’s story matters, and that His purposes unfold across generations. Even from difficult circumstances, God brings about His redemptive plan.
