Genesis 38:3

And she conceived, and bare a son; and he called his name Er.

Genesis 38:3 (KJV)

Genesis 38 turns from the story of Joseph to focus on Judah, one of the sons of Jacob, also called Israel. This chapter records events in Judah’s life, including his marriage to a Canaanite woman, the daughter of Shuah, and the birth of his sons. The verse begins the account of Judah’s family line, which becomes significant in the broader history of Israel’s tribes.

The verse states that Judah’s wife conceived and bore a son, and Judah named him Er. In the Bible, naming a child often carries meaning. The name “Er” means “awake” or “watchful.” While this verse does not explain why Judah chose the name, it marks Er as the firstborn son, a position of importance in the family and in the lineage of Israel.

Judah had three sons: Er, Onan, and Shelah. Er is the firstborn mentioned here. Later in the chapter, Judah takes a wife for Er named Tamar (Genesis 38:6). The verse sets the stage for the events that follow, including Er’s death and the actions of Onan and Tamar.

Judah’s family line is part of the genealogy of Jesus Christ. Matthew 1:3 traces Jesus’ lineage through Judah and his sons, showing how this family, despite its flaws, carries forward God’s redemptive plan.

Although this verse does not give direct moral instruction, the surrounding chapter offers lessons on faithfulness, family dynamics, and God’s sovereignty. Judah’s life includes mistakes and repentance, reminding readers that God works through imperfect people to accomplish His purposes. The birth of Er shows that God is at work even in ordinary family events, weaving them into a larger story.

Consider how God’s purposes often unfold through everyday circumstances and flawed individuals. The naming of Er, though brief, points to a divine plan that extends beyond what is immediately visible. Readers are encouraged to read the whole chapter to understand the full context and to seek wisdom from trusted commentaries or spiritual leaders for deeper insight.
