Genesis 46:6

And they took their cattle, and their goods, which they had gotten in the land of Canaan, and came into Egypt, Jacob, and all his seed with him:

Genesis 46:6 (KJV)

This verse appears in the account of Jacob, also called Israel, moving his whole family to Egypt during a severe famine. His son Joseph, once sold into slavery, had become a powerful ruler there and invited them to settle. The journey from Canaan to Egypt was a major step of faith, leaving the land promised to Abraham for an uncertain future.

The verse stresses that Jacob and all his descendants brought their cattle and goods acquired in Canaan. The phrase “all his seed” includes sons, daughters, and grandchildren, showing the complete family unit. They did not go empty-handed; they carried what God had given them, yet they left behind their homeland. This detail reminds us that God often provides for the journey even when the destination is unknown.

This migration fulfilled God’s promise to Abraham that his descendants would become a great nation (Genesis 12:2). It also set the stage for the Israelites’ long stay in Egypt, which later led to their growth as a people and the events of the Exodus. God was working through this move to preserve His people and keep His covenant, showing that His plans often unfold through ordinary family decisions.

Trusting God’s guidance often means leaving the familiar. Jacob’s family did not know all that awaited them, but they followed God’s leading. Believers today can learn to hold earthly possessions loosely and to value family unity during times of change. God can use difficult circumstances for His purposes, even when the path is unclear. He may ask us to move, change jobs, or step into a new season, and He promises to go with us.

This verse reminds us that God’s providence is at work in every transition. The same God who guided Jacob’s family through famine and relocation watches over His people today. He is faithful to His promises, and He calls us to walk in obedience, trusting that He will provide and protect. As we face our own moves and changes, we can rest in the certainty that God’s purposes never fail.
