Hebrews 1:2

Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;

Hebrews 1:2 (KJV)

The opening of Hebrews contrasts the old and new ways God has spoken. In times past, God spoke through the prophets, but in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son. The phrase “last days” refers to the era inaugurated by Christ’s coming, the fulfillment of God’s redemptive plan, not merely the end of the world.

The verse reveals Jesus as the ultimate revelation of God. The opening phrase, “Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son,” declares that the fullest disclosure of God’s character and purpose now comes through Jesus Christ. While the Old Testament conveyed God’s message through prophets, visions, and dreams, the New Testament era presents the complete revelation in the person of the Son. Jesus is the Word made flesh (John 1:14) and perfectly displays the nature and character of God (Colossians 1:15).

The clause “whom he hath appointed heir of all things” affirms Jesus’ exalted status and authority. As the appointed heir, He possesses dominion over both the physical and spiritual realms, a truth echoed in Scripture where all authority in heaven and on earth belongs to Him (Matthew 28:18; Ephesians 1:20-23). This inheritance includes every aspect of creation, confirming His supreme lordship.

The final phrase, “by whom also he made the worlds,” underscores Christ’s active participation in creation. The Gospel of John testifies that “all things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made” (John 1:3), and Colossians 1:16 further declares that through Him all things were created, both visible and invisible. Thus, Jesus is not only the revealer of God but also the divine agent who brought the universe into existence.

This verse sets the stage for the rest of Hebrews, which demonstrates the superiority of Christ over angels, Moses, and the old covenant. The Son’s role as creator and heir establishes His preeminence over all creation.

Hebrews 1:2 calls believers to recognize the completeness of God’s revelation in Christ and to respond with faith and obedience. Since God has spoken finally and fully through His Son, we are to hold fast to the confession of Christ’s supremacy, embracing His unique position and authority in both natural and spiritual realms. This truth deepens our understanding of Jesus’ divine nature, His role in salvation, and His rightful place as the center of our faith, reminding us that in these last days God has chosen to speak primarily through His Son, the ultimate expression of love and grace.
